The GCIO, Mr Victor LAM, JP, visited the work by partner schools of the “Enriched IT Programme in Secondary Schools” and participating schools of the “IT Innovation Lab in Secondary Schools” on display in the Learning and Teaching Expo 2021 on 8 December 2021 and encouraged students to pursue development in the IT industry in future.
The "Soccer Robot" is made up of a four-wheeled vehicle, a motor, an infrared sensor, an ultrasonic sensor, and a microcontroller. The students will control the movements of the robot with program codes. Based on information fed by the sensors, such as its position on the soccer field and the position of the ball, the robot can deploy actions to send the ball into the opponent's goal. During the game, there are two soccer robots on each sides. The robots will need to determine instantaneously what tactics of attack and defence to take based on the situation on the field, which means that coding is very important. The work won the 1st and 2nd places in the RoboCup Junior Sim 2021 (Asian Region) and was named the Champion of the RoboCup Junior WorldWide 2021 (Soccer Lightweight).
The "Schoolbag CHECK" aims to help junior grade students improve their efficiency in packing schoolbags. The work provides schoolbag checking function. Through RFID technology and mobile phone application, students can set up class schedules or define schedule based on their own needs. As such, students can avoid packing less or more than the required number of books and effectively reduce the weight of their schoolbags. Every day when students have to pack their schoolbags, they can do so based on the reminders sent out by the mobile app even if their parents do not have time to provide assistance because they have to go to work. In addition, students can examine the contents of their schoolbags and the items that need to be used at any time through the mobile app, without opening the schoolbags for inspection, which is very convenient. The work won the Merit Award of the Greater Bay Area STEM Excellence Award 2021 (Hong Kong), the Champion of the 2021 Yuen Long Youth Festival Youth Creative Design Competition, and the Gold Award and Canadian Special Award of the 6th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada, iCAN 2021.
“Auxiliary Game for Stroke – Rehabilitation” aims to enhance the efficacy of treatment by providing therapists and stroke patients with a rehabilitation support package which not only conforms to the existing mechanism but also yields better results. The target group is patients suffering from stroke for a period from three months to one year. The patients will undergo training by means of playing games under the guidance of therapists to achieve the purpose of home rehabilitation treatment. The work won the Gold Award of the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2021 Student Innovation (Senior Secondary) Awards, the Champion of the 全港VR復康遊戲設計比賽, the Bronze Award of the HKHS Gerontech Competition 2020/21 (Secondary School Category), the Merit Award of the Greater Bay Area STEM Excellence Award 2021 (Hong Kong), and the 高中組最佳團隊協作獎 of the STEM-Up HK Innovation and Technology Competition.
"TECAS 2.0" is a system specially designed for the elderly to improve their self-care skills. The "TECAS" system is mainly comprised of two components: IoT Smart Home and TECAS APP. IoT Smart Home can use different sensors to monitor changes of the environmental indicators at home, e.g. temperature, humidity, smoke detection, and air quality (such as PM2.5) detection, etc. When these environmental indicators show a bad sign, the TECAS APP will send out a reminder or an alert to the elderly so that they can take action to rectify the situation on time. In addition, TECAS APP will also provide community activity information, tailor-made health information and medication reminders, etc. It also has an instant chat room function which can enable direct contact with social workers or nurses. The elderly will be encouraged to do more exercise and participate in social activities, thus improving their health and reducing unnecessary medical expenses on one hand, and ensuring their mental health on the other. The work won the Award for Outstanding Performance and the Merit Award of the Hong Kong District Cisco Innovation Challenge 2021.
The "Smart Food Labeling System" is a mobile application designed to help the elderly or people with poor vision to read the information on the nutrition label more easily, so as to reduce the risk of consuming expired food or allergic food accidentally. Users can use the mobile app to upload pictures of nutrition labels of packaged food. The app will use Cloud Vision API to analyse the contents of the nutrition labels, and use Text-to-Speech artificial intelligence technology to read out the contents so that users can easily grasp the information. In addition, the system can also record the users’ daily diet information, and let users understand their nutritional intake through a graphical interface which in turn helps them maintain healthy eating habits. The work won the Best Potential Award of the HSBC Hong Kong Community Partnership Programme 2021 – SMART Community Hackathon.
Learning and Teaching Expo is Asia’s leading education expo and Hong Kong’s annual signature event for educators. The Expo has been greatly supported by the Education Bureau of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the education community from Hong Kong, Mainland China and the Asia-Pacific region over the years. It has also provided an opportunity for innovative international education product suppliers and service providers to meet with principals, teachers and educators from Hong Kong, Mainland China and the Asia-Pacific region.
